"Diplomas" in treatment rooms

Do you hang diplomas, certificates of certification, etc. in your massage room (or anywhere in your office)?

Why or why not?

Are they all bodywork related, or do you have others up (college or other degree).

Yes-I have my massage school diploma,my National Certification,my North Carolina Massage License,a framed copy of the NCBTMB Code of Ethics,and my Reiki I and II certificates all proudly hanging on the wall in my reception area. All of these things I have worked hard to earn and believe in,and have no problems showing my clients my dedication to massage therapy and Reiki. Show your pride in what you do!

I dont. Most professionals that I have seen keep these in thier private office, and I would keep them there if I had a private office. But in the treatment rooms I have been in I rarely see them.

I have been to therapists that have them, and those who do not. I kind of like them, but that is partially just because I am curious to know where the MT went to school, and what kind of CEUs they have taken.

I would probably put mine up, but I share a room.

I do, but I don't have all of them, just the major ones, my licenses, NCTMB, and deplomas. If I put them all up, I would be covering an entire wall!!! So I stick to those, and they are on the wall as soon as you walk in, so there isn't any question about my professionalism.

And Palp - even when I did share space with someone in a gym, they were up on a wall... the clients quickly realized that she wasn't certified by the fact that she didn't put anything up herself... when we had a 3rd person come, she put hers up... the one who wasn't certified wanted us to take ours down, I refused... and that is when I told the 3rd to put hers up!

Everyone is licensed and certified, etc. That is not an issue at all. I just don't know that it is the vibe of the space.

Professionalism has nothing to do with licensing or the NCTMB, but they sure would like you to believe it does. It is how you conduct yourself, if you uphold the standards of a massage professional (no happy endings), treat clients with respect, keep files confidential, etc...

You dont even need to have attended a massage school to be considered a professional, but it would help. I would take a massage from a self trained massage professional with 20 years under their belt over a fresh graduate any day.

In most professions, if you get paid for what you do, you are considered professional. Remember the olympics back in the day? There used to be a rule that olympic athletes could only be in the olympics if they were considered amatuer, ie not paid to compete. They have since changed that ruling. Remember the Dream Team?

So, you may have one upped her, but that doesnt mean she is any less of a professional than you are. If she is a member of ABMP, she could just as well hang that on the wall.

I hang the diplomas from both schools, business licenses, Nat'l cert., association cert in the outer office. Code of ethics in the tx room. Most MDs, NDs, and L.Ac.s I have been to put their diplomas in a tx room and I like seeing them -- I'm always curious!

She didn't even have that, I don't even know who insured her... this was in NJ. She was honestly the nightmare person to share a room with, and it wasn't my choice. But that is another topic, and probably for the private section...

In Texas, I think you're supposed to display your certificate, with the current renewal thing. (Technical term. Yeah, I'm too lazy to go see what it's really called.) I'm very proud of mine, even though it's a measly 300 hrs compared to other parts of the country, since it's proof I can actually follow something through to completion without mommy and daddy holding my hand. I got mine professionally matted and framed and hung it in the part of my treatment room that corresponds to the "skills and knowledge" gua according to feng shui

In my room, I hang my certificates and diplomas. I hang CEU certificates of modalities that I offer. I also have my business license in a 'conspicuous place' and my Association certificate on a bookshelf.

Had I graduated from college, I'd have also hung my nonmassage diploma if I were proud of my school, my education, and my degree choices.

Certifications for techniques that I practice, my diploma, state license and professional association are all in frames on the walls. That and lots of this and that sorts of stuff. Clients feel reassured that I can do what I say I can do when they see the paper stuff in pretty frames on the walls.

: Honestly, it just makes me feel more comfortable and professional to allow potential clients to see I have a source of validity. Not to say there aren't folks out there who are "formally educated therapists" who don't do questionable things though... :roll:

I used to hang every single certificate on the wall, but now I just have my Texas License and MFR certs up. I keep taking more things out of the office to avoid a "cluttered" look.

We are required in Ohio to display our licenses in a prominent location, mine is in my treatment room along with my diploma. I couldn't find my diploma for a long time, I had packed it away in a box in the attic during a sabbatical, so now I know where it is!

It's a requirement in VA to post the state and county licenses in the treatment rooms, though the spa I worked in didn't do that. One in a long line of state requirements they don't follow...that's why I don't work there anymore. They had unlicensed, not even graduated, massage therapists working there passing them off as licensed.

I considered putting more up (my college degree, as well as continuing education certificates) but I felt like it would be too much. Like I would be trying too hard to impress people with my education, when instead, I'd rather be judged by the quality of my hands-on bodywork.

Which code of ethics do you post? I think I have the ABMP one up now (I'll be switching to AMTA this year so I'll change that), but there's one for the NCBTMB too, and there might even be a state one.

I was wondering that, too. I just switched from AMTA to ABMP. So far I am happy, but I haven't even read the stuff they sent yet, lol.
