Don't know anything about it... and I apologize for not having time to look it up right now to be familiarized... but a quick blurb --- a friend of mine went to Mexico a while back (maybe 7 years now) and had a massage on the beach where his therapist beat him on the back with some "sticks"; he said it was great!!!! He checked them out and said they looked like she had been using them forever.... and it seems like she was pretty ancient too, as I recall.

Maybe it's a similar thing. t028

This is probably more like the danya (saunas) in Russia, and then they go outside in the cold and smack the skin with birch branches.


I think the bamboosage is more of rolling out with the bamboo? Have not experienced it, but see the advertisements.

Couldn't we do the same thing with a tortilla roller?

I work with a therapist who took the course and she loves it. I also love it because I get to receive the bamboo treatment!!!

While she has encouraged me to try working with them, I just don't vibe with it.

One thing that I don't love about the bamboo is that they don't seem to hold the heat as well as the stones do. I do love that she can do some really deep work on me with the bamboo without hurting herself. I've had severe whiplash three times and experience some severe tension and pain in my neck/shoulders on a regular basis. For the last year or so it seems to act up about every two months and this has been a true relief for me. I'll send her the link to this thread and she can tell you her thoughts on this

Okie-dokie --- I got a little time this morning to look up some links for Bamboo Massage. I've decided, it is something I'd be interested in taking a good course on, with a preference for the Tian Di Bamboo Massage.

The first thing I watched was the YouTube from BarefootMasters who offer: Bamboossage™ and Bamboo2Go™ . Oh, geepers, I forget how lightly many people do a swedish. No wonder I have so many muscles in my forarms.... I was sitting there watching that thinking it was going to be deep and it was a bunch of really light movements with the hands first and then the same light movements with the first set of short sticks. I get deeper than that on my first "swedish" style stroke. I will have to remember that when someone is coming in for swedish work they are used to something a LOT lighter than I do on a daily basis. OK... off my "shock-box" and putting that into my memory for future reference.

I did not care for the two short half sticks being put together to work the neck. It looked nice and maybe is somewhat effective, but I would think the area where they are being held together would be a place for clients hair to get caught in. I'd like to know more about that.

The "Middle Man" stick work still looked quite light compared to what I normally do with my hands. I have to read up on this and see if Bamboo Massage is supossed to be a deeper style work or is most of the massage a light to moderate swedish. If it's not meant to be deep, then I understand and can mentally work with that.... however, if it's meant to be deep, I don't see it being so effective. Or, maybe the pressure is "to each their own"? As they got into the lower back work, it looked like there was some deep work, but not so specific (but at least closer to what I was expecting). It seems to have a deeper broader pressure.


Another style of bamboo massage I located is Tian Di Bamboo Massage which seems to be a little more of what I (personally) was thinking the pressure would be along the lines of. Bamboo massage combines table or chair massage with six to eight sticks. Some are made of hollow bamboo and others are made of solid rattan wood. Rattan is a type of palm wood. Sets of the sticks are custom-made for each individual massage therapist to fit his/her hands. They come in a variety of sizes and shapes.

The variety of sticks work the varying shapes of the client's body better than a pair of hands alone can. The sticks glide and roll around smoothly. They tend to reach places on the body that can be difficult for the therapist's hands to get to.



Bamboossage is a perfect complement to chair massage. The sticks glide easily through layers of clothing, working the muscles, stretching them, dissolving trigger points, melting away the pain and stress of the day. The sticks provide a way to give effleurage strokes on the body in chair massage.

Using the stick set is less stressful on the therapist's hands and body. The massage therapist gives deeper pressure during chair massage without having to apply extra pressure.

The sticks are smooth and once warmed, it is difficult for the client to differentiate between them and the therapist's hands as they rhythmically glide and roll over the client during chair massage.

Actually, I think it can be deeper than the stones. You can get better leverage with the bamboo because of the length of it. She has one that she uses the end to really dig into my shoulders with and can brace her elbow in her hip to hold the position.

My friend took the course from BarefootMasters. She has (as I think we all do to a degree) added her own style to it and can do the deeper work with it. Personally, I like that she starts a little lighter with it and then progresses to the deeper work. It gives me time to relax into the massage and let go.

The videos are deceiving. The work can be very deep. I have clients that tell me I need to let up. And as with all massage you need to first warm up the tissue and then go deeper to cause less pain to the recipient. Putting the 2 pieces together does not catch the client's hair. The warm tools feel exquisite, especially in the cold north of Indiana. Barefoot Masters travels all over to teach the Bamboossage and also has a very good Home Study program for this modality. I'm curious about the actual bamboo sticks. I like the bamboo sticks in the Tian Di Bamboo Massage videos better than the Barefoot Masters one. I haven't had the chance to try out any sticks in person to get a felt sense, but the ones from the Tian videos look better to me, and I like that they are capped on one end too. It seems like if you were doing TP work with the it wouldn't "cut" into the client with the edge like it seems like it might without the cap?

I'm interested in doing Bamboo Massage because it looks fun to me, but also because I do not naturally gravitate toward deep work at all, and some (many) want deeper work than I enjoy doing. I can see how using the bamboo could help me out a lot. It's much more my style with the oil and flow to it, but also looks easy enough to go deeper with it for clients that are looking for that.

I wonder if there's anybody here who has trained through the home course...would be interested in feedback on that...

And finally, now I really want a Bamboo massage!!

I bought the Bamboo-fusion kit..I LOVE them..I have only began to practice on my husband and he said it gets pretty deep..I love using them..and I cannot wait to try them on my clients!

I bought the bamboo-fusion kit too. I haven't got a chance yet to practice with them but I plan on it as soon as I get some kind of heating pad to warm them. I'm really wondering though, how do you keep them warm enough and for any length of time? I really like my bamboo sticks but I'm kinda disappointed with the DVD. There wasn't any talking on it and the camera shots were not very good. The waterfall in the background was pretty though. Nobody around my area here does bamboo massage so I would like to get this technique down pat so I'll be able to offer something different.

Barefoot Masters(http://www.my2feet.com) has a great home study kit for Bamboossage. You get 8 tools for the table massage, heater, oil, detailed manual and a professional quality audio DVD. It's like having an instructor in your room talking you through the technique. Barefoot Masters tools are made of sealed rattan and bamboo; the rattan tools are solid, hold the heat quite well and even though the ends are not capped they do not dig into the clients skin.

I have been doing Bamboosage for 2 years and my clients love the pressure I can give just by adjusting my angle of the tool. Less work for me, great pressure for them!

Thanks for the information. I am wondering, since this is a home study, does it qualify as CEU's? It looks like it might according to website but I'm not sure. I found a heating pad today that is large enough I think. The high heat goes to about 140 degrees. The instructions in my kit said to heat them up to around 120. Is this accurate?
