A question for the ladies...

I was wondering if anyone has had an experience like mine, or if anyone can give me a logical explanation as to whether or not my problem could be related with massage:

I am a student, and receive massage twice a week. I am in class with the same 16 women every week, and have been since last summer. My last menstral cycle began 12/8/06, so that makes it about 3 months late. Yes, I've taken the home preg. test, and it was negative. I mentioned it to a small group of girls, and another one said that she hasn't had it for that long either, and another was late, but not by that amount of time.

Could getting "too" many massages affect your system that way? It doesn't make sense to me; if anything, I'm so relaxed, I would think that my body would be in an ideal state.

I know that women can influence eachother, but I would think that it would increase in frequency, not decrease...

And lastly, I don't have health insurance, so I'm looking for any/all useful info that I can use to educate myself with before I suck it up and shell out the money to go.

If your cycle began 12/8/06 and you were regularly having 1 cycle a month, then by normal calculation you should have had a cycle on roughly 1/8/07, 2/8/07, and the coming up on 3/8/07. As it is just now the first of march and you are in a class of 16 other women that I am sure have quite a bit of estrogen I would not be too alarmed.

It is normal when you are working so closely with a large group of women that spend such a great deal of close time together that their cycles will fall off their normal mark and "reset" themselves. Then you will end up with 20% or more of the group with cycles that are running on the same exact schedule. I would be willing to guess that at some point during the month of March you will more than likely have some sort of a cycle be it normal or small.

At this point, I don't think that it would be anything to become terribly alarmed by. While I was in massage school there were 18 other women in my class and only 6 men. All of us women ended skipping 2 cycles and then ended up being on the exact same cycle with each other for the remainder of our course together. The classes ran for 6 months, so for 3 or 4 months we were all PMSing together. The guys hated us.

Your body is becoming more intune with your surroundings. It's natural.

It's not unusual for women to occassionally have what is called an "anovulatory"cycle. Basically what that means is that ovuation did not occur or was defective in some way (regular, large doses of ibuprofen has been connected as one cause of this.) Without ovulation our body doesn't get the correct hormonal signal to start menstruation. If you were just a little late (a week or two) then I'd suspect late ovulation but 4 months is too long to just be delayed.

There can be several causes for this. Stress, changes in diet, too low or too high body fat, excessive physical exercise are some causes.

The normal way to correct this is to take Provera (a synthetic progesterone) for 5-7 days and then stop. The drop in progesterone then will signal your body to start your period. This requires a prescription from a doctor. Is there a health clinic or nurse-practitioner that you could see?

The only possible connection I could think of with massage is if you are using a lot of essential oils that would impact your body hormonally? Not sure which EOs that would be (I'm not an aromatherapist) but there are some on the board who would know.

Back in the day............

Many years ago a number of studies were done on female college students living in both dormitories and sorority houses with regard to the regularity of their monthly menstrual cycles and any possible changes in them.

What was found was that the women in those situations gradually shifted their menstrual cycles to follow more in line with the "dominant" female of the group. Whether the dominant females were deemed so by social position, appearance, etc., the change in ovulation was present in 90 plus % of the case studies.

Hello, I've always heard about women influencing eachother, and I suspected that to be the cause in my case. I suppose it never really occured to me that the body would skip several months in order to align with other cycles. I thought it would skip a month, at most.

At this point, I'll wait a little while before trying to jumpstart it with hormones, but thank you for that suggestion, Moogie. I'll keep that in mind. For the record, we do not use a lot of essential oils, so I can rule that out.

Since our classroom time was Sept-Dec, this could explain a lot of why all the girls acted soooooo goofy in Dec. :twisted: :twisted: :twisted:

The above posts are in line, however I have had circumstances where my lower back was out of place and caused a cessation of menstral cycles. I have gone as long as 18 months at one period of time and not realized what the problem was! If you can see a chiropractor, mention this to them, they can adjust you accordingly. If you can't afford to see one at this time, have some one work in your low back area. It's possible that QL and psoas are tight, keeping those lumbar locked up. Gluts, hamstrings, ITB, and quads could also be tight, keeping that lumbar from moving. If your hips feel tight when you walk, this is a pretty good indication that this is going on.

If this doesn't help, try Progesterone cream. It contains Wild Yam which is a natural progesterone and can help to bring the hormones into balance if this is the problem. You can pick it up at most health food stores for around $15 or so. Use the cream on the abdominal area twice a day for at least a month. This will give it time for the body to process the hormone in your system to help balance things out. Hope this helps!

If you're getting a lot of student massage, esp. if you started abdominal or pelvic/sacral work in January, there may have been some unintentional unskilled misplacement that is contributing to stopped periods.

I would speak to a trusted instructor about this, because they may be able to help you get your viscera repositioned properly if that is the problem and they are trained to correct it.

If that and chiro don't fix it (and maybe even if they do), it's not a bad idea to see your lady-parts doc, just to keep tabs on things. Especially if you have been regular before this.
