hadn't thought about it, but you're right re the comparison; here's three from Mt M, I was competing there last March, even the little island is a match for the NH one. Water temp - even in March it was wetsuits for the 3km event.

I gotta tell ya, I was tempted to let it pan out and take pictures of whatever the result might have been. There were maybe 4 or more Water Monitors chucking quiet laps of the lake at regular intervals and every now and then one would crawl onto the bank to investigate whatever it thought might be edible. They were all about 1.5 metres in length, same same as a Goanna in Aus.

It crossed my mind that surely the locals must be aware of them and think them harmless but when he climbed up the bank and the way he was eyeballing the sleeping guy I figured if he did fancy a taste he could cause some real damage.

If it was a rat and I have my doubts on that , as it was quite big and the shape of the head was unlike any rat that I have seen , it looked to me like some embryo of god knows what , very weird looking creature and little madam does not know the name in English either.
