Thai Massage vs. Partnered Yoga?

What's the difference, other than the latter being more of a give and take?

I'm studying Thai and just watched a video on partnered yoga and it looked very similar. Does anyone know if one could offer partnered yoga with a massage license, given the similarity, or would one need certification in yoga? The lines seem very fuzzy to me.

I was under the impression that one did not need to hold certification to teach yoga.

I think Thai Massage & Partnered Yoga are very different in practice. One way is that Thai massage includes meridian acupressure in addition to the passive stretches.

akb: I just found that out on Yoga Journal. I thought you had to have one, but apparently not. hhhmmmmmmm....

Bliss: Yes, of course. I should have been more specific. I was really just referring to the stretching aspect of Thai. There is a lot of rocking and pressure involved that obviously would not be part of the partnered yoga. Thanks for prompting the clarification.

Isn't it, though? And really, they could offer it without having ever DONE yoga before, if you want to get down to it. I mean, they could read a 50 page book and decide to teach. :shock:

Northern style Thai massage and partnered yoga are very similar.
Southern style Thai massage is not that similar to partnered yoga - it's the style that concentrates on the meridian acupressure.

Northern style Thai massage is often getting called yoga massage these days, or Thai yoga therapy eg http://www.deonthaiyoga.com (that one is actually a great introductory short course for northern style)

Thanks! That actually makes a lot of sense. I took a class in the Southern form, but I'm learning Northern style from this really great book called "Thai Bodywork" by Niclaire Man and Eleanor McKenzie, and the later definitely is heavier on the stretches from what I've seen. Not that the Southern style doesn't have plenty of it.

I love it when things I love cross over into one another, like how my massage practice has increased my yoga, which lends itself to greatly improving my belly dancing, which has improved my massage!
