Someone is actually doing something to improve the safety in these nightclubs that are sometimes jammed packed.

Looks like a lesson was learnt from the fire in BKK last month.

For once I say.. Give this guy a chance.. So far this Gov has been nothing but on the ball, even to the point of entrenched families and power.. And dont think for a second that its just co-incidence that Bangkok bigwig gave the locals a tongue lashing just after the new guy got the hot seat.

Of course the proof is in the pudding, but he really seems to be trying.

Maybe, just maybe.

Not sure he was on the ball just AFTER he was appointed when he took a trip along the beach and was SHOCKED at the number of rip counterfeit goods being sold. Did he not come here before accepting his appointment?? Or is it just another case of propoganda?

I wonder why though they had a top level meeting regarding jetski ripoffs ( not attended by reps from Patong, naturally) and not a word about the much more serious impact on tourists.. tuk tuks.

He talks a good fight but, we will see how serious he is and where his priorities lie.

Safety of the populace and tourists is a good start if anything actually happens.

Im afraid its just more hype and will disappear.

He also expressed strong support for the words of the Permanent Secretary of the Department of the Interior, Dr Peerapon Taitasawit, who opened the Patong Carnival last month with a speech telling local leaders that they should serve the community rather than ''taking the opportunity to line their pockets.''

Dr Preecha believes that business and politics should be separate. If people want to make money, they should stick to business, not pretend to serve the people.

'Don't charge the tourists too much, and they will come back,'' Dr Preecha said. ''People in the tourism industry should be thinking long-term, not short-term.''

His personal view is that tourism is Phuket's best future pursuit, not property sales.

''Some opportunists make too much money without giving anything back,'' he said.

''The Pearl of the Andaman will not shine once it is permanently chipped and tarnished.''

Follow the law, and there will be no problems, he added.
