NHS waiting lists

Hi everyone,
I'm really just writing because i'm so frustrated with NHS waiting lists
I was referred to my consultant 16 weeks ago and saw him 12 weeks ago when I was told I needed an discectomy. In the meanwhile I did have a few sessions at the osteopath but could not afford to keep going. Phoned the consultants secretary and then the waiting list people.......my op will prob not be till end of May because they have had to cancel alot of ops because of bed shortages!!!!
Its so annoying as I'm due to go away in the summer with my little boy who is not yet 2 and if its too near my holiday to give me enough time to recover I am going to have to cancel the operation and wait till I come back!

I think this 18 week max wait time is a lot of rubbish.
Has anyone else had such a long wait?

Hey Pinkrae,
can understand why you would be fustrated, there is nothing more annoying than being in pain and no-one realising the urgency of your condition. Hope you are not in too much pain
if it helps, I waited 7 months for an MRI and then another 7 for my 1st disceptomy If I was you I'd use the time you got now to get as healthy as possible ready for a quick recovery.
Anyhow, I hope your op comes around quick for you and all goes well

Thanks for your support...it is true about people not realising the pain you are in unless they have gone through it themselves. I'm trying to keep as active as I can so I can play with my 20 month old but it is hard at times
I will keep on thinking positive back thoughs

18 weeks max, that’s nothing! I am waiting for 3 years and going to have my 2 wisdom teeth removed. I knows is not the same condition but I can not see the logic behind waiting lists. It just ends up costing NHS more on the long run. I had to go many times back to the dentist to have antibiotics prescribed for the infections I had on one wisdom teeth, call emergency lines, have painkillers prescribed and all tease could have been avoided and NHS money saved if people would just get their surgeries in times.
Makes you just want to greet NHS managers with a Bazuka and loads of ammunition! You guys going to hear about me on the news lol, nah just joking!!( I really don't have a Bazuka)

Hey i went to my GP with my back problem, i got an MRI scan 2 weeks after, the results were sent back to my GP the following day, i discussed the results with my GP 2 days after and was given and appointment there and then to see a consultant which was in 10 days.

I saw the consultant and my op is in July.

I guess I've been the lucky one here

I think that the thought of having to wait for the doctors appointment, for the test results, for referrals, for treatment and all of this is what puts me and others from seeking help in the first place for things that ail us long term. I always feel ridiculous going to the doctors as they either don;t know what to suggest, or tell me as they don't see an apparent problem (like a gushing wound for example) that I should go home empty handed (and hearted) and come back in a month if it persists. This has turned into a rant and I am sorry but I must vent steam
