My Sweedish Warmblood?

I want to field board him for the summer, and someone told me you cannot field board a warmblood. is this true??
or is it just not the best idea..?

You sure can, and most all do wonderful. Just check daily for injury's, keep a eye on the weight, make sure nothing extra is needed, dental up to date, and hoof care. Gee how could I almost for get worming and vaccinations

I have a Swedish Warmblood myself. He's the apple of my eye.
He stays on partially field board year-round & apart from not having too many friends he makes out just fine. :]

There is no difference between pasture boarding a warmblood and any other horse. That notion is ridiculous.

Horses are meant to be outside. Its how they evolved. Many health problems we see in horses today are because we try and keep them away from their natural environment.

As long as the field has safe fencing, is free of toxic plants or other hazards, and he has good company, he should be fine. As with any horse, there is always a chance that they will get hurt in the field, but its usually scratches or scrapes. The well being and health he will have from living like a real horse will more than offset any risk.

My Dutch Warmblood is pasture boarded. He often has a bump or scratch, but he is sound and sane because he lives outside like a horse.

Horses were made to live outside all the time. When domesticated horses came about, the hardy horses still live outside all year round. Some of the fine skinned horses like thoroughbreds started living indoors because people felt it was bad for them to be outside all year. Your horse is perfectly fine living outside. Just make sure he has some form of shelter, whether it be a tree, an outdoor walk in shelter, or a big bush protecting him from the wind. You will have a larger job grooming, as horses don't stay clean outside. Make sure your horse has PLENTY of fresh water to drink. Try to keep AT LEAST 2 buckets out in the field. But you will have to constantly fill it up. I would recommend having a trough of tub of water for him to drink. If you are going to be riding him, make sure you give him a grain supplement to suit his needs. He will need a farrier to check on him regularly, a vet check up regularly, de-worming, vaccinations, ect. Make sure there are NO POISONOUS plants in the field for him to eat, including acorns, ragwort, and other poisonous plants. Check the fence weekly, every other week or as much as possible for broken rails, nails sticking out, or any other hazardous fence parts. Over all, your horse is perfectly capable of staying outside all summer and he would probably be much happier that way!

i dont believe it matters on the breed of your horse. the only things that matter are: making sure it's not too hot outside and that your horse likes being outside, since some horses just don't prefer to be outside all the time. it really doesn't matter the breed!

Iam going to bet the person who told you this is slightly high maintenance? You can feild board any horse. First off - if it werent for humans creating barns/stalls and the highmaintenance life of horse care theyd be outdoors 24 hours a day, its their natural environment. Of course its nice for stall rest and shelter but as far as Iam concerned when you start to "baby" them, you start to run into issues. I find 98% of my horses are happier outside. Of course there is always the odd one who loves to be inside - but usually they've been babied to enjoy it in most cases so - long story short, your guy should be just peachy out there! : 0)

Why not? As long as you approve of the fields/fencing/feeding/ratio of horses per paddock/etc., and your horse has had West Nile, etc from the vet, decide of the need for type of shoeing or not (will you still ride) and the exposure to weather (rain, sun, etc). .... all being said, my two mares are boarded outside & come in the barn for lessons.

A warmblood is viewed as a cadillac of horses so the person might have looked at it from that angle...why would you leave a cadillac in the field, not the garage if you know what I mean. I expect that is their thinking.

The only 'problem' I found with mine is that they are always with other horses so definitely have a horse thinking/group thinking pattern, whereas in a stall, they are more isolated and less effect of other horses more of you...

Not a major problem if you're happy with the abovementioned.

You can field board any horse. Breed does not matter. People may think a hoity toity warmblood cannot handle being out in the field 24/7 - but the warmblood doesn't know it is 'better' or 'more sensitive to the elements' than the grade pony grazing next to it.

Of course that's not true. Your horse will be happier and healthier if he's field boarded. Just make sure it's a safe pasture with some sort of shelter from the elements.

protection from the sun is the MAIN concern when turning out a warmblood. Everything else is exactly the same concerns present with ANY other breed. TO much sun can cause stroke, and a wide range of problems.
