Sounds like the same guy who goes around screwing over restaurants in the Scarborough, beaches area with the same kind of scam ... any one owning a business in the GTA east should be very leary of anyone coming around and saying they are there to inspect any kind of fire equipment.

Have them show you a license and give you their phone number... tell them that you have been warned by the fire department that there are some unlicensed people going around pretending to be fire equipment inspectors, and that they have told you to get the license and phone numbers of anyone claiming to be there to inspect your fire equipment and that they suggest that you are to check with the fire department first before authorizing any inspections.

Tell them that as soon as the fire department confirms their license you will call them to come and do the inspection.

If they actually do leave you a license and phone number, call the city to confirm (even if they have a real license that allows them to inspect fire equipment, you have no legal responsibility to allow them to do so, only the fire department and city have the right to demand a fire inspection) ... most likely though, the result will be that they tell you that they will have to go to their truck to get you their license number and a business card ... they will leave and not come back.

Businesses that need to have adhere to fire regulations and might require fire safety inspections are responsible for calling authorized inspectors and arranging their own inspections ... only authorized city fire inspectors will come around and do unsolicited inspections, and they will have all their documentation with them and have no problem providing you with such documentation .. they will also not charge you money to do the inspection (they might fine you for failures, but that's not a service charge for the inspection) nor will they try to sell you anything (they may tell you you need to repair or buy something, but they will not try to sell you the equipment or service.)

If you do have your own concerns, you can arrange for a fire equipment service company to come around and do their own "inspection". They will advise you on any work that needs to be done, or any equipment that needs to be repaired or replaced, but they should not come around unsolicited.

If you have someone come around unsolicited to inspect your fire equipment, and they are not with the fire department or city, then you are probably being scammed.
