ID to get in to clubs

I've heard that they are asking for ID at some clubs/bars, to check if you are 20 years old. Since I'm 20, I guess that therefore they will be asking me for ID quiet often.

My question is, what types of ID's are OK? Obvious the passport is, but I'd rather not carry my passport on me when I'm going out to drink. So is a simple copy of the passport OK? Or will they accept national ID-card from EU-country?

photocopy of passport should do, but never really seen any id checks to be honest, as long as you have money you shouldn't have to much to worry about.

Erm.. Not good advice to not have any...

Singaporean girl, 19IIRC, caught underage in a bar in bangkok, got arrested and cos she couldnt reach any parents held for a few days in jail.. Made the sing papers and was typical Thai over reaction by police creating bad press.

something with your age and photo on it will be fine...drivers licence most probably

most likely you won't be asked being a falang but as LiL says best to have it with you just in case

In reality it is Thai law for all non Thai nationals to have their passport (and in Thais case their national ID card) on them at all times

Over the Christmas New years there were 2 occasion were i seen people asked for ID at tiger. First time 2 Thai girls and on another occasion 1 American he looked young but was 22 (looked 16) i had a chat to him inside and was 1st time he had been asked in Thailand.

Find it easy just to do as snowy has suggested and keep a photocopy of your passport in your wallet. I also carry my drivers license from back home aswell as it does not bother me if i loose this can always be replaced.

i am 20 also so was one of my friends and the other two were 21 and we had no problems. had our license bak at the hotel just in case but i never went out at nite with my ID. no need !!

Again not good advice.. Theres no need until there is a need, just because it works ok for one person doesn't mean it doesn't end in a huge problem for someone else.

Best to take some kind of photo ID with you, I look very young for my age and am always being asked for it.

If you look like Denver or Lil, shouldn't be an issue,,,

seen many thai girls showing their id's at the doors of many night clubs, never seen a farang id'd take your driving licence out or yes a photo copy of your passport or if your 15 and get id'd then slip them a couple of hundred baht : )

OK, thanks for info. Guess I'll carry my drivers license with me then.

I will meet up with my little brother (18y, so he's a minor) for some days in Thailand as well. With him and his friends I had planned to just go out to the first club which does'nt ID us.
But reading the case with the singaporian girl, is makeing me a bit anxious if there would be a police raid while at a club with him.

So, to avoid him from getting into trouble if caugt as a minor at a club, I've planned to help him fix a fake ID by scanning his passport, editing his birth year, and printing out the fake copy.
Do you think that is a bad idea? The risk for him to getting caught that the passport photocopy is faked must be extremelly low (I don't see how they could discover that), but if he would get caught, will he be into some serious problems then?

just one of those things mate...worst case is what happend to that girl from Singapore....best case nothing happens and you have loads of fun. Just have to work out if its worth the risk...imo of course it is.

Personally I wouldn't do anything shady in another country away from home. The punishments can be pretty severe if they feel like it, though in LOS usually Baht will help get out of situations. I don't think you're going to get any BM here rationalize making a fake ID....

So when you are are down the Thai police station after the raid... and they are looking at your real passports... you're explaining the fake ID how? Hopefully this forum is saving you some future pain...

I would say the chances are so low as to be near nil.. And far less trouble than you would get into forging a passport.
