I am so glad someone has started this category. i am a firm believer in energy work, even years before i ever became a mt. I don't advertise it, I don't offer (on menus) it but I believe it is very real. I am very energy "aware". I often feel vibes from people upon meeting)Lately, I am feeling very unattached and ungrounded. I did 5 massages yesterday to a very nice group of women, many of them wanted to talk a lot during the massage- something i don't mind only if the client intiates conversation. i try to remain very focused and present thru my sessions talking or not. today i am feeling extremely nauseous, tired, depleted. I posted before about feeling nausea during a pregnancy massage but the feeling passed. ironically, one of the women was pregnant  and i got the feeling that it was a difficult (emotionally) pregnancy. Somewhere- somehow I have kind of lost my way when it comes to guarding- I've become a sponge. What techniques can i use to guard myself??

For guarding, you need to be aware of energy flow.  It is very easy to learn to push, pull, stop, or allow energy.  Once you learn them, you can stop the flow (of unwanted) energy from the client.  Simply "cut it off" at your wrists!Maybe guarding isn't your problem, how well are you grounded?  If energy is flowing through you, you need to be an open channel.  A good ground and open chakras 1 to 7 all are required.  This way it is the universal energy being tapped, not your personal energy.

jon_o - you are absolutly right on. I know the answer to this, I am using crystals and grounding excerises to balance. I am very receptive to harmful energies, so this weekend I will be focusing on not watching the news, eating healthy and doing some yoga. And most of all- getting some bodywork done myself...

Epsom salts bath is a good way to cleanse your aura too.  Do you "spin" your chakras daily too?  That helps to keep them all open.  Energy work shouldn't deplete you, but the massage part will.

You can spin your chakras by visualizing them, one at a time spinning with their associated colour.  Fill the chakra with its colour, then fill the room with the colour.  Don't forget your will chakras on the posterior side.  With practise, you can visualize them all spinning at the same time.  Start with your root chakra (red), finishing with your seventh (white).  You can add hip "swing" to enhance the efect.

i've been told all kinds of things on this subject, but i will relay one.  I was once told when you use your own energy you will get drained.  when the energy comes from a divine source you are not depleted but elevated.  does anyone ever experience this, when they get done with a massage they feel physically like they just got massaged and a feeling like they can conquer anything?a feeling of total well being and elation?  Some times i wonder if i moved my own stuck energy that's why i feel that way,  then i feel guilty and say "oh please don't let the client get any of my stuff"...........i do pray for this before and after the massage..............protection that is for both parties envolve...................people say all kinds of things i just have to go by what is real in my own personal experiences.  i know one thing that is fore sure, if im talking during a massage which is rare but some clients do,  i don't feel anything on a spiritual level shifing at all.  to go there i need total silence within myself...........

I agree with Puamameole, and prefer not to talk at all during a treatment.  I can tune in (or out if your prefer) and my awareness of guidance is much clearer and I feel, at least, that I'm providing better for the client.  Most times massage drains me but since I use Reiki too, it balances out the expense of my energy with the recharging brought about by Reiki.  More and more I give massages with the awareness of Reiki.  That seems to help.  I like Puamaeole invoke the help of the Spirits/Master Healers and Guides.  It's essential to me.  I do not heal.  I am merely the channel.  And, I do ask for healing for me as well, so maybe that does help to break up blockages within us bodyworkers too.  I can't say for sure. Maybe someone else can speak to that better thank I.  Thanks Jon O for the explanation of spinning the chakras, although I was taught to visualize coming into the front and exiting out the back (I'm guessing intention is what counts here but I'm willing to try the other way too).  As for crytals, I learned and use quartz for my Reiki healing grid (probably another topic) and am admittedly, a beginner with using other stones for healing.  Melody's book Love is in the Earth, is a great resource for stones and their healing properties.

PuameoleYou should try and find a healing touch workshop in your area.  It would explain everything you are noticing and asking about.  The universal energy is there for everyone's use.  You do have to ask your clients permission before you channel it to them.  They came to you for massage, correct?  I have heard of therapists asking permission "intuitively", but it needs to be voiced.  Feeling more energized and up following giving a massage could mean that you are recieving the universal energy, but don't be too concerned about wether or not you are channelling it.  There are specific methods to do that that you would have to be aware of, before it would be a concern.It is a great feeling isn't it!!!

ManahanaThe chackra spinning is based on Barbara Brennan's teaching.  The chakras all spin clockwise (when healthy) as seen from outside the body looking in.  The roots of the chakras connect into the "main power conduit" which runs pretty much centerline from the top of the head to the perinum.  They bring universal energy into the body. Have you ever worked with a pedulum?  I just got a carnelian stone pendulum yesterday and will "break it in" to my field then try it with others then.

It seems I hear different information about Chakras.  SOme guides have them pointed different directions than others. Some have them all spinning clockwise, or counterclockwise, or some of each alternating as you go up the body. SOme guides say that the spin for men is different than for women.  SOme guides seem to say that when you feel the energy, it means that you need more.  Others talk about a depletion or hole in the energy, which I take to mean that if you don't feel the energy you need more. Perhaps I'm being too rational, and yes I've had some wonderful results, but this is quite confusing to me, and I have to wonder if the wonderful results were more luck and the person on the table, than any skill on my part. As far as transfering negative energy, I've seen a very good energy worker talk about therapists carrying their client's energy with them. I've also just had a case where my client told me midway through the massage that he had been directing reiki at my hands ("To prevent arthritis",  he said) yet the whole time I had been thinking how my hands were hurting, and needed a chiro adjustment. Interestingly enough, my hands stopped hurting the 2nd half of the massage when he quit sending me reiki. (I could feel when he stopped.)

SharpI have only heard that which I have posted.  I have done extensive reading, and attended many workshops.  By far the best explanation is by Barbara Brennan in "Hands of Light".  If you are at all interested then that is probably the best place to start.  She has a college in Florida that has a Bachelor of healing program, 4 Masters tracks and she is working on a Ph D program!  Barbara has High sense perception that allows her to see these things (chakrs and auras and more).  She is teaching others to see them also.

I like Sharp, have read conflicting info  Barbara Brennan vs. Marudi Seidman (my Polarity teacher and author of books on both Polarity and Chakra healing).  After all, we're relying on each's ability to perceive which is filtered thru each author's personalities and ways of perceiving.  I'm willing to accept that intention will correct any misinformation.  According to Diane Stein in the Essential Reiki, if you "draw" the symbols incorrectly, they will be corrected for you.  I'm going with this for now because, otherwise, I'd go nuts and never practice.  I use/rely on my pendulum.  Mine is Bloodsone. While I sense energy (tingling) from my palms as I scan the client's chakras I can only tell if I feel something  or not and how high up from the body I can feel it.  The pendulum shows me direction and speed of the spin.  Now,  what do I do with it from there?  I just give Reiki and then check again with the pendulum.  Most times the chakras open. I'd love to learn what the specific problem is and what's the protocal.  Just like massage.  Am I asking too much?I had a Reiki treatment one time and the "master" gave me a detailed sheets of info regarding each chakra.  If it was on the anterior and the pendulum was ellipital going clockwise it meant this.  If it was going horizontal if meant that.  Really specific.  I find that hard to believe.  According to whom? But, I'd love to hear that you CAN be that specific.  Could we be that scientific about chakras?   How do I learn that?  Yet, the "master" just recording what she saw with pendulum and had no info herself, merely relied on the typed info.  To Sharp and the client who sent Reiki.  If your hands stopped hurting that's great.  Maybe the hurt was the Reiki breaking up the "stuff".  I don't know if you can disect the healing process to the minute, you know?  Just me.

did anyone see the movie the unholy magadalena?it was interesting a phillipino movie with english subtitles.  i wont discuss it here, but when you watch it then you would understand why i posted it here.JOhn O i actually learned some healing touch, techniques that left out the whole energy explanation.  its real funny because i seem to be able to tap into it about 80% of the time.  i dont know how i do it i just do.  well focus and my breath.  but i will check out a teacher because i do know a few that teach it.  is high touch part of the procedure?  have you heard of that i do it before every massage it's like our higher selves asking permission to do the work and your hand will raise above a clients body naturally without moving it?i've played with a pendulum i think its personal.  like making a connection with it that only you can sense it and relate to what it is saying.  i've learned to clear chakra's with my hand visualizing each chakra and placing my hand on them and visualize the color and breathe that color into the person.  when i check it again with the pendulum it is open, i think its cool.

have client laying down, have them do some beath work to relax.  speak in a soft soothing voice.....have them visualize a fountain of energy bubbling forth from the center of their chest.  tell them this energy is endless and always there for their use when ever they choose to use it.  have them imaging the color red, bursting forth from this well, shooting up high and breaking through the fields of energy.  sorrounding them with the color red, swirling around there body coursing through every vein, tissue, muscle, pore, cell.........  then after a few moments while they play with this in their body have them start drainning the color out through their toes.  suggest if it still red or is it a darker color or brown or black.  just have them notice this.........then start with the next chakra ect. ect.  until you get down with the crown chakra, you can suggest like say yellow, solar plexus, the seat of our personal power,  or our heart chakra being able to open to love ect. ect..   tell me if you guys use it and what was the responses.........aloha, puamaeole

Wow!, no, I've never tried that.  Great visualization though.  I've asked clients to breathe in a certain color if I felt the need.  I can see how powerful that could be.  I'll try it myself first.  Mahalo.

I'm doing more and more visualizations with people - and getting some very interesting results.  My massage therapist suggested that this might work very well with the chatty people - they can't relax without someone talking, but if the therapist gives them direction/focus/ something else to listen too, they may settle into the intent of the massage better, without feeling like they have to fill an empty space. Right now I'm just asking what their favorite place is, and taking the cues for the visualization there. Basically, whatever the place, I'll take a positive aspect and have the client visualize it coming into their body, giving it a meaning and purpose. I've used waves from the beach, hot sun, sparkles off a lake, wind, and the shshsh sound of wind through trees. All of these are a metaphor for the energy, and whatever the person's favorite place gives me a starting point for an energy that resonates for them. Interestingly, yesterday I started with the sun's heat (red) at the 1st chakra, shifted to water around the  heart chakra as we brought energy up from the lower chakras eroding a blockage in the 4th (heart) chakra, then in the 5th (throat) chakra, it shifted to wind (canyon-like, with whistling effect!). To me that made total sense given the liquid effect of blood in the heart, and the air effect of breathing down the windpipe.  Cool!

that's sounds really good too!  she also incorporated biosomething i forgot the modality (oh sugars) but together combined it was great.  as for chatty clients it is rare for me but if i do and they don't get into the massage i tell them they wasting my time and theirs and they should come back another time when their bodies will appreciate it more.  and i won't reschedual with them i will refer them out..... it take to much out of me to hear chatter, then it becomes a manaul thing and it takes away from my real intent of why i do what i do.

Energy isn't going to always flow dramatically. If it doesn't, then just be sure to give a good structural massage.  Nobody loses, it just is what it is and what it is able to be at that moment.
