Corporate Chair Massage

I am excited at how things are building. I had mentioned on another thread that I hoped to get in at the local hospital. Well, I recently did chair massage for 4 1/2 hours at a staff appreciation breakfast at the hospital. 6.00am is a very early start.

Another trust company is starting, for a corporate gig on Valentine's Day.

I got to massage symphony members before their December concert.

I have a new truck company that likes to get chair massage once a quarter. The second session is next month.

It looks like I have got in with a local company that puts together employee benefit plans. They like the idea of the JFB-myofascial release that I work into the chair massage, especially for things like bad backs and carpal tunnel. I am to start in their office first. (All I need is a first appointment! )

I have only done one school - an alternative high school - but have not had any further success with the school boards - so far!

You do MFR during chair massage? How long do clients get in the chair? How much are you able to accomplish in that time?

You would be amazed
With the scapula (if indicated)
-start with some joint mobilization
-then mobilize superomedially
-squeeze the upper traps for 2-3 minutes
-then if the tissues allow you, hook your figures on the anterior portion of the superior angle. Use the same pressure you would use to hold a piece of paper.
-be very gentle and go slow

Almost every chair massage session that I do now incorporates MFR, unless they are three minute ones! And even then, sometimes.

It is an amazing way to release knots in the neck. I usually start with circles down the back, either side of the spine, feeling for restricted areas. Yes, you can feel that even through clothing. If there are no restrictions - rare, but it does happen, I would just do a normal chair massage routine.

If there is some restriction in the back, I then check the neck, and do some gentle sustained pressure into whatever area of the neck or back has the greatest restriction. Two to three minutes will generally release all but the most stubborn knots, and people are thrilled. I then move to the area of next greatest restriction.

If the session is longer, I have done arm pulls, leg pulls, traction to the head and neck, ear pulls and worked on any body part I can get at!

There is the occasional person who only likes deep tissue and does not "get" MFR, but most think it is great, especially when they feel so much better in such a short period of time.

How much are you able to accomplish in that time?

In MFR if you engage the tissues an immediate tissue release is often felt. This can be attributed to the mechanical properties of connective tissue. However stronger forces, longer durations and the heat form your hand would be required for a permanent viscoelastic deformation of fascia. Fascia is densely innervated by mechanoreceptors which responds to manual pressure which would trigger changes in the ground substance. Stimulation of these sensory receptors can lead to lowering of sympathetic tonus as well as a change in local tissue viscosity. Fascia and the autonomic nervous system (rest or fight and flight) appear to be intimately connected.

So as long as you engage tissue properly you will have an affect.
