Dundas and Sherbourne is one area I avoid. Surprisingly this happened on Bloor just east of Spadina. To be honest I was really enjoying some music (Tame Impala) and lost awareness of my surroundings. Lesson learned. Usually the worst thing that happens on Bloor at night is some itinerant will shout “Can I ask you a question”, which I just ignore.

pepper sprays are illegal in Canada. The closest thing you can get is bear spray. I will just walk in the opposite direction. Depends on which part of the city you hang you, you will see a lot of creppy people like Dundas and Sherborne area.

You can always make your own. Get some chilli oil extract, not the sauces, but the ones that are 1 million scoville units and up, mix with water and put into a small spay botte or even a small water gun. Boom, instant pepper spray.

Knives are dangerous and double edged, and unless you know how to use one and have the willingness to use it, it's a hunk of metal. Never carry weapon that you aren't mentally prepared to use.

There are some really sketchy area of downtown Toronto that one should almost always avoid. If it wasn't for Toronto harsh winter I'd imagine our DT will be overran by homeless like East Vancouver.

Pepper spray may be illegal but you can buy it in retail "spy" stores where you can get covert cameras and other gear. I carry one when I walk, which is often in ravine trails, for use against coyotes and other "predators"...

I have been in many fights which were arguably my fault for getting to that point to begin with. But I don’t regret them. Once you get into a real fist fight with someone and actually fear for your life it toughens you up in a way nothing else can. It makes you stronger and more confident. I can look at people taller than me or more muscular than me and know that deep down I’m tougher mentally than they are. It’s all about how you want to live your life. Always walking away from the shady hooded black man on the street. Or continue walking like normal cause you are more confident. It’s not really pride or arrogance. It’s a sense of knowing your own security and safety level. My advice to anyone is to avoid fights if possible, but be prepared to defend yourself if your safety or the safety of someone you love is in jeopardy. Most muggers will attack out of the blue without warning and usually when you least expect it. Turn in the news, Toronto isn’t safe anymore.

Toronto has been going downhill since the police went from police force to police service. They hired daisy and friends to be our protectors, there has to be a level of respect before you listen to them. Cops were 6'4" & 250 lbs, they were respected. Now you have frail little pansy cops that are laughed at.

I used to walk around with a sword cane until I realized how stupid that really was. Then, I got myself an Unbreakable Umbrella, but in the long run, it didn't make me feel any more secure. I even took to carrying a retractable baton in my car for a while after a scary incident.

I have a retractable baton in my car as well. While I don't plan to use it unless absolutely if lives are at stake I couldn't care less about whether legal or not. But best to just avoid sketchy people/area and your lives will be much better in general. The world is full of idiots but that doesn't mean I need to interact with them.

I would very much doubt it and I'd ask very politely to the office if he has any probable cause and that I object to any search. I also happen to drive an expensive executive level car and I don't drink/smoke/do drugs. The only vice I have is this hobby really. I didn't even get a single speed ticket or even a stop when I had a 2 door sport car. Actually come to think of it, I actually did kind of cut in front of a police car once without noticing it and he pulled up beside me and gave me a stern talk at the light and that was it.

Anyway treat police office with some decency and respect and they generally don't give you a hard time. The police has to deal with the lowest rung of society frequently and that can't be good.
