You misread what I posted. I didn't say there was no HIV/AIDS in the ZN before 2005.

I said one year that from January 1st until August none of the chicas being tested for a health card showed positive for HIV. There was one year where for over six months no ZN chicas tested positive for HIV; it really surprised all all the health care professionals and hence made the news.

That is what is currently being reported. Although I haven't seen any studies done in support of this claim using a methodology I trust. (If somebody has I'd appreciate a link. Everything I've seen uses "subjective" measurement tools and comes from groups looking for funding increases.)

I agree with the basic premise. The cultural and economic causes for prostitution are very different.

I think many more women in Mexico become prostitutes out of economic necessity than is the case in the US. (The US has a greater "safety net" than does Mexico so the economic need for women to become prostitutes isn't as great in the US as it is in Mexico.)

While I don't have stats--only observations--to support my views, it appears Mexican prostitutes maintain stronger family ties than do those in the US. I think Mexican prostitutes are more likely to support their children than their US counterparts. Which supports the basic notion that the reason Mexican women turn to prostitution is often different in Mexico than in the US.

Speaking in generalities, in the US women seem to first become drug users and then prostitutes to support their drug habit. In the ZN I see the reverse with women becoming prostitutes first (often for economic reasons) then turning to drugs. (Drugs enable them to drink without falling asleep as well as to cope with what they are doing.)

In the report the good professor David Bellis PHD, wrote about half way down,' then I told each of the 72 American women that I was a California State University professor and former heroin Addict(in field research like this, self revelation by the researcher is useful in gaining respondent confidence)' In another online article discussing his report David Bellis said he use to shoot up heroin in run down apartments where he to to hang out with other drugged out street prostitutes! Clearly this guy just wasn't bullshitting the 'street girls' to get them to open up, this guy was an ex-Heroin addict. He even runs a clinic for substance abuse, and had many prostitutes as clients.( it usually takes an ex-addict to help others off their drug addictions}

I would say the motivation for his work is to reduce HIV infections in street prostitution along with lowering drug use among street prostitutes by looking at the Mexican system, and following some of their methods, decriminalization, of the prostitution trade is a secondary concerned, but an important element to reduce drug use in prostitutes

I see many problems with his study, which I don't have time to get into, but the major problems is the American Street Hooker, is just so different then the Street girls in Mexico both culturally and economically. You can't just point to the Mexican decriminalization methods, and say that's the reason for less drug use among Mexican prostitutes. The guy jumps to conclusions too, 'blaming the Social Support system in the US, housing subsidies, AFDC money, food stamps, etc, leading to a greater proportion of drug addicted prostitutes than are found in Mexico.'

But I like the study and found many things accurate about both Mexican-Tijuana, and San Bernardino, during the time when the study took place.

HIV/AIDS is up in Tijuana, but don't blame the 'sex providers' but that's a subject for another post.

I don't know much about Dr. Bellis' personal life, so I can't comment on his being an ex-drug user. The motive for his work, however, is usually considered to be the decriminalization of prostitution in the US.

There are usually attacks on the methodology behind most studies of sexual practices in Tijuana and elsewhere. This always happens when interviews are used to obtain data; interviews are usually needed as there is usually a lack of empirical data and/or methods of obtaining empirical data relevant to sexual practices.

A couple of years ago about 1000 women giving birth in Tijuana’s General Hospital were tested for HIV/AIDS. (Tijuana General provides care to the indigent and is where most “putas,” drug users, and other women from the "lower levels" of society have their babies. So it is fair to assume the HIV/AIDS rate is greater than in TJ's population at large. The infection rate was comparable to that found in New York City.) I think it was in 2005 that it wasn’t until August that the first case of HIV was found among TJ chicas being tested for health cards.

For these and reasons I’ve always considered the work of Dr. Bellis accurate. However, as noted above, that is far from a universal opinion.

Speaking of scholarly round-ups, I spent a couple of hours in a book store looking at the fact, figures and fotos in this book, Here is Tijuana. Enhanced my interest in the place. Don't quote me, but I recall one stat claiming that Mexicans consider TJ the happiest city in their nation. I'm guessing that's a little different than what Americans think. And the book is not completely monger hostile. They've even quoted somebody here, a reasoned voice, giving the website but not the poster. Check it out:

I assure everybody I didn't steal the Professor's prostitution report from Burt many years ago. What happens is many people find the report on their own, they don't do a search of the forum, and just re-post the same reports over and over again. I'm sure we'll see the report again in the future.

Besides a few people found problems with the methodology of the report, and I found the good professor to be a FREAK himself! I am not mistaken, the professor was an ex-drug addict himself, and seems to get off being near HOOKERS and their drugs.{ in my book that makes him qualified to write the report, even if there is something wrong with his methodology}

In the late 80's and early 90's San Bernardino was loaded with street hookers. I use to find it a better place than Hollywood, Ca! There was no need to travel to Tijuana, with the street action in San Bernardino, and the cheap MPs near by, now only the MP's are a good deal, and the street action has dried up, except for the 2-4 rated HOs you see on the streets sometimes.

Brant it works both ways! Bohemian, my opinion on Miami bar is it's hit and miss, and lately it's more miss. But if you like to dance, and like girls that don't dress like Putas but wear regular clothes then Miami might be a good place for you. I believe the above reference about “nuns and girl scouts” is to an article by David James Bellis, Ph.D., Professor and Chair of the Department of Public Administration at California State University, San Bernardino. (I posted about his research several years ago on another board and consequently many mongers are now familiar with some of his concussions, although I doubt many have read the entire study.) The term Dr. Bellis actually used is "choir girls." What he wrote that many mongers like to quote or paraphrases is:

Coming back to the drug topic, No I am not writing a book ! I am not that original. I just wanted to get a feel. One time I was with a girl who was picked up by the police, from whatever broken English I could undersand the charges were "under the influence". Then some person from the bar came and released her. The cops were demanding money from me to release her ! The damn girl just disappeard with the bar person, and I was left standing at the police station !
I agree prostituion since legal is a lot safer and probably less drug users as compared to the street walkers in the U.S.

Bohemian are you writing a book or something? I don't know what perceneforum.xxxe of chicas use drugs, due to the fact I don't use drugs. I know in the US, it seems 100% of the street walkers use drugs, and 75% of higher end prostitutes use drugs. There is a well known report on the web comparing San Bernardino streets walkers to Mexican prostitutes, and the writer says, the Mexican putas are 'Nuns and girl scouts' compared to US streets whores who almost always do drugs and have police records!

La Tropa has run hot and cold with hotties the last 8 years or so, since I first went there. They travel South and bring chicas back just like the other bars.
