Try a book by Hiroshi Doi on Gendai Reiki (Modern Reiki).  I like it a lot.  He speaks more on character and self-improvement than other books I have read.  It tends to be more in line with the original Ususi Reiki in this respect.

I agree with Jenn regarding Essential Reiki. However, I recently received an email from a new Reiki author, Jacqueline Chin.
