My husband, who asked his wife for a neck massage, has lived with disability for the rest of his life.
According to the Singaporean media Must Share News on the 7th (local time), a neurosurgeon in Chiang Mai, Thailand, recently posted a video titled "Don't trust your wife's hand" on her Facebook page.
A said he reviewed the case of a 54-year-old male patient who was unable to speak and his right arm and legs weakened.
A scan of the patient's brain revealed that a significant portion of the left brain was dead. Additional tests also found that the carotid artery was broken and blood was not supplied to the brain.
A warned of the dangers of amateur massage, saying that you need to know anatomy to avoid dangerous blood vessel rupture.
Meanwhile, in December last year, a female singer who received a neck-twisting massage in Thailand eventually died of aftereffects such as general paralysis.
According to local media at the time, Chayada Prao Holm, a traditional Thai song singer, died of a blood infection and cerebral edema at a hospital in Udon Thani, northeastern Thailand.
He said on his Facebook page early last month that he had been to the same massage parlour in Udon Thani state three times in about a month since the beginning of October, and that he had been paralyzed since then.
In the first two massages, he said, the same massage governor gave him a neck-twisting massage, and two days after the first massage, he began to feel pain in the back of his head and a week later, he felt his limbs paralyzed.
After the second massage, two weeks later, my body became stiff and my pain became severe, making it impossible to turn over in bed.
He explained that he took painkillers because of this, but it hurt so much that he could hardly sleep.
"But my mother is a massage parlor and I've been studying Thai massage since I was young," Chayada said. "I love massages so much that I haven't suspected them yet and I thought (whole-body pain) was simply the result of my massage again."
He said he had swelling and bruises all over his body after receiving the third massage from a strong massage.
He then said he was unable to lift his right arm after two weeks due to sensory paralysis up to his torso, and when he posted on Facebook, he was unable to move more than half of his body.
Chayada said, "I have to recover. I already want to work, he said. "I hope my story will be a lesson for people who receive a lot of massages."
Later, in the middle of last month, Chayada's condition worsened, making him unable to move in bed, and later died, the Bangkok Post reported.
His boyfriend said he wanted to take legal action against the massage shop, but was not sure there was enough evidence to do so.
"What we need to look at is whether the massage service provided by the massage shop (to the deceased) is the right procedure and whether it conforms to the standard pattern of traditional Thai massage," said Argum Pradit Suwan, deputy director of the Health Service Support Bureau of Thailand's Ministry of Health.
He also pointed out, "Some Thai massage governors are currently using various technologies, leading to services that fall short of standards or can cause injuries."
Professor Tiravat Hemachuda, an advisor to the Oriental Medical College at Lancet University, explained that if you twist or bounce your neck violently during stretching, exercise, or massage, your carotid or spinal arteries may be damaged and your body may be paralyzed.
Professor Tiravat warned, "The risk increases with the power of twisting, bouncing, or turning the head," adding, "Repeating these activities for a long time causes problems not only in the nerves but also in the blood vessels in the neck."
