IHM techniques

Hi everyone...hoping someone that specialises in IHM can help me. I did a one day course and learnt some things, but felt with the techniques learnt it wasn't enough if I wanted to offer IHM professional at any time. I learnt it so I can practice on friends/family and would look at doing a longer course on it sometime. In the meantime I got a book on IHM Francesca Gould which seems to have a lot more techniques in to which was covered on the one day course, but saying this techniques covered then aren't in the book. At the moment its around 70 points from start to finish....can i email what i have to someone to look through and if they can advise if there are any that i can take out or should be added in.

At the moment i still have to refer to notes which I don't want to do, but my practice is limited simply because I can't remember all the techniques otherwise.

I did my course in 11 weeks, I don't think 1 day was enough TBH. I used to practice on a teddy bear when there wasn't a head free

do you have 71 movements that you do or less? The one day course was for a taster so i can practice and see if I am able to do a longer course (because of my own health etc)

Oooh I don't know, never counted them lol, the treatment take me 45 mins to an hour including consultation tho.

Oh dear, what are these one day courses like (said with tongue in cheek, please don't take it personally).

FG's book is very good textbook and her protocol are fine.

Finding another IHM therapist and doing swapsies can be useful. We are have different techniques and ideas, and exchanging with other therapists broadens your skills base and confidence - even if you have been doing it for donkey years.

I personally wouldn't quantify the amount of steps in a IHM routine, it's what you do with it that counts. Better to have 12 good techniques than 36 sloppy ones. There are DVD's out there as well. Also YouTube have some IHM stuff.

But why not go on a longer course? Just see the workshop you have done as an introduction. If this is the right path for you - go for it!

I did a 14 hour IHM course a few years back in between sitting my Reflexology exams and getting the results. The 14 hours was all massage training as the A&P. business, ethics etc stuff had been recently covered on the Reflexology course.

It took me 12 months to be really happy with my IHM routine, and more than a few times I thought about giving it up. However I'm so glad that I didn't because when it all fell into place IHM came alive - clients love it , I love it and I get alot of repeat business and referrals and alot of very positive feedback.

I found that DVD's / Utube was really helpful to use when putting together the techniques I wanted to use. And of course the key is practice, practice, practice.

Keep going and it will all fall into place - one day it just all comes together and you realise you've just done a treatment that you are really happy with without having to think about it.

People enjoy huge benefits from IHM, they often look years younger after a treatment so it's worth putting the effort into learning and practicing until you can do it standing on your head so to speak.

I need to go back to do the exam that comes after it [plus completion of case studies] and will hopefully do that in the Autumn.

I know its months since this post but I just wanted to say, I too did a one day course last November and I was not happy with my routine for ages, but now after having a treatment myself and comparing notes with a friend who had done the 3 month course, I have used the best techniques from both and I am now happy, the results have been wonderful. The one day course is a good basic instruction but you then have to get out there and practice and find what works for you. I too looked at you tube but the most useful was having the treatment and finding out what felt good.
Now it is one of my favourite treatments to give.

I am studying IHM at the moment and am concentrating SO hard on remembering the actual routine that I don't think I'm doing it particularly well. I just feel I'm rushing through it.

We have to do it a certain way for our exam (although I don't "think" there's a time limit) but will check that out and hopefully I'll feel more at home with it.

I am also not really enjoying doing it through clothing on the back and shoulders, since I am used to working on skin. Feels a bit strange to me.

Sorry to have to say this but an exam without a time limit isn't a very good examination assessment. 30 minutes for the treatment is the norm. But I do realise you don't know yet.

It is good to learn how to massage through clothes and without oil as there is a market for it, so it is worth the time and effort. But after the exam you can always work the client with their top off and towel wrapped around them.
