Respectfully disagree. What few interactions I have had with the TJ cops have demonstrated to me that they are not as bad as people make them out to be. They are certainly not as violent as police from some of the back East U.S. cities. If you fuck with them, though, I am sure they are just as capable of putting a beating on you as Philly or DC cops. I watched one drunk monger acting disrespectful to a street chica and then mouthing off to the TJ cop who came to investigate. The cop had the monger stand against the wall and frisked him while two other cops quickly came for backup. The altercation ended fairly quickly with the original cop giving the monger (in very good English) a scolding and a warning. In Baltimore, for example, that monger would have been treated very differently.

Bribery and corruption had been an inculcated problem in Mexico for several decades after the revolution. It is still a problem but much reduced. As Sampson says, act respectful but hold your money in your hand. There is no reason for them to touch it. If they ask for a bribe, ask to see the judge ("el juez" -- pronounced "hu-ace" with a long a and silent e) and that should be the end of it.

The best advice is to simply ask respectful at all times. On many occasions, I have witnessed American mongers -- some drunk, some not drunk -- acting rudely. STAYING AT LAYVA

Here is my much delayed street mongering report: Went with friend to TJ last month and stayed overnight for the first time. Was able to share on gas from Long Beach and share on parking. Of course, we didn't share rooms. Shared cost was $35 for gas & parking for two days & taxi to and from border. Rooms at Layva hotel was about $30 each for noon check-in until one p.m. the next day.
