cortizone shots

can you massage the area that just received a cortizone shot? If not, how long do you wait and does it even help..a client wants in, had a cortizone shot in arm..hurts badly..can i even help?

I do not have any "concrete" statistics on this, but I remember when I had a cortisone shot for my planter fasciitis the Dr. told me that the area would be a local contraindication for 4-5 days. (In reference to my physical therapy)
Based on that I have always avoided any area recently injected with cortisone for the first week for fear of moving it away from the tissues that need it most.

uh oh..I had a client come in yesterday and was so sore from her cortizone shot, she had the shot 3 days earlier, and I massaged her..she said she felt much better..hope I didn't hurt anything ..

Jacqueline, 3 days was probably enough time for most of the cortisone to absorb into the inflamed areas, don't you think?
Like I mentioned in my first post, I have no concrete guidelines, only what my physician advised me with my own pathology. And that was based on the following appts with PT where they used stim and ultrasound

It must be the season, I literally had a client beg me for a massage on his shoulder today--it is sore from the cort. shot that he had YESTERDAY. LOL
What I can do is call him ( I scheduled him for next week) and ask him to get a time frame from his Dr and see exactly what he recommends.
stay tuned!! ** Of course each Dr and each situation can and probably will be different, but it would be nice to hear what at least one Dr. says.**

We were told in a NMT class NOT to massage the immediate area for 48 hours as cortisone needs to absorb and not be spread around. I believe the key word is "immediate". If they got injected for example in the shoulder, it's Ok to massage the back but avoid the shoulder etc.

Oh shoot Jacqueline, I forgot to follow up on this thread with what my client's Dr. said.
The Dr. said the injection site (and the affected area or joint) would be a local contraindication for 2-3 days. After that, the area could be massaged but to visually inspect the area first and if you see any redness or swelling to advise the client to return to their Dr's office.

I hope this helps for future issues with cortisone injections.
